Abstract
This study will examine the role of “connectedness” in the decision process of the “double dropout” to leave school a second time, after being enrolled in a special program for high school drop outs. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant relationship between the connectedness felt by students and the decision to drop out of school. The areas studied in relation to connectedness were neighborhood, friends, self in the present, parents, siblings, school, peers, teachers, future, reading, kids from other cultures, religion, mother, father, and conflict. Students who had previously dropped out of school and had chosen to return to earn their diplomas were administered the Hemingway Measure of Late Adolescence. The students who chose to earn their diploma enrolled in the Gateway to Success program. The results of students who dropped out a second time (double dropout) were compared to the results of students who completed their diplomas through the gateway program. The survey results were examined using an independent t test analysis. The p values indicated a significant relationship between the double dropout in the domains of self (p = .002), peers (p = .001), teachers (p = .000), and future (p = .000). The finding results were that in the domains of self, peers, teachers, and future the perception of “connectedness” makes a significant difference between students who complete their diploma and the students who choose to drop out a second time.
