The Perceived Motivation of Social Roles: Implications for the Legitimacy of Gender Role Fulfillment

Johnston, Amanda Marie

Abstract Details

2011, Doctor of Philosophy, Miami University, Psychology.
My previous research investigated the perceived motivations underlying social roles. People perceive women’s traits as especially motivated by ideals (e.g., hopes and aspirations) rather than oughts (e.g., duties and obligations); men’s traits are perceived as equivalently motivated by ideals and oughts. Two new experiments examined the system legitimizing function of these perceptions, such that these perceptions can be used to both reinforce and defend the existing status quo. In Experiment 1, the experience of system threat amplified the perception that traits are motivated by ideals more so than oughts. In Experiment 2, exposure to information that women are motivated by ideals rather than oughts significantly increased the endorsement of gender-specific system justifying beliefs. These two experiments demonstrate that perceiving women as especially ideally-motivated is a system legitimizing belief, thus contributing to the stability and reinforcement of the gendered social system.
