The Effect of School Climate on Internalizing Difficulties in Middle School Students

Hung, Anna H.

Abstract Details

2011, Master of Arts, Miami University, Psychology.
There is a high prevalence of internalizing difficulties in children and adolescents. However, the extant literature on school climate and internalizing difficulties focuses predominantly on students involved in bullying. This study examined school climate factors contributing to internalizing difficulties among middle school aged students. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a four-factor structure including: What Adults Do, Bullying, Classroom Order, and Student Relationships. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the four-factor model. However, Bullying was not considered a school climate factor and was subsequently removed for the regression analysis. Of the three school climate factors, multiple regression analysis revealed What Adults Do and Classroom Order uniquely predicted internalizing difficulties, indicating that student perception of disruptive classroom behaviors and the actions of teachers and school staff is more strongly predictive of internalizing difficulties than Student Relationships. The findings of this study offer potential theoretical and clinical implications for school-based interventions targeting internalizing difficulties.
