A Certain Kind of Dark Miasma: Marcel Carné’s Cinematic Memory-Spaces

Collins, Ryan John

Abstract Details

2011, Master of Arts, Miami University, French.
This thesis explores the theme of subjective memory as a cinematic landscape, depicted specifically in two films, Le jour se lève (1939) and Quai des brumes (1938), by French director Marcel Carné. Divided in two parts, the first examines the technical cinematic aspects of mise-en-scène, montage and the like used by Carné to depict the subjective and represent memory on-screen. These techniques will be analyzed and read through the filter of Deleuze’s affection-image and the resulting espace quelconque (detailed in his work Cinéma I). The second part examines memory artifacts found within the on-screen images, or what Roland Barthes would describe as punctum, and how they relate to the theme of subjective cinematic memory landscapes.
