This report details my ORISE fellowship experience with US EPA in the Water Infrastructure Protection Division (WIPD) of the National Homeland Security Research Center (NHSRC). WIPD strives to reduce the vulnerabilities of water infrastructure systems, prevent and prepare for terrorist attacks and enhance recovery efforts while also working to minimize damage to infrastructure and public health impacts. Decontamination of drinking water pipes subsequent to a deliberate infrastructure attack is a crucial area of research for NHSRC. The focus of my fellowship has been on modeling, simulation, and evaluation of various contaminants of interest in support of drinking water distribution system decontamination research. My initial experiences with the fellowship involved familiarizing myself with the subject matter and research tools involved with water security. Along with learning water security software tools, the majority of my time has been spent on a study to evaluate the importance of using detailed water quality models.
