Abstract Details

2011, Master of Science, Miami University, Chemistry and Biochemistry.
This thesis addresses two fundamental research areas in chemistry, chemical synthesis and characterization of new inorganic compounds. The studies presented here are still at their fundamental stages, but the results obtained allow scientists to examine the compounds’ unique properties and offer insights on how to improve these compounds to get to the final application stages. The first part involves fluorescence spectroscopic studies on several new metal organic frameworks (MOFs) based on a unique tricarboxylic ligand 4,4′,4″-s-triazine-2,4,6-triyl-tribenzoate (TATB). The studies examine the fluorescence properties of these MOFs and show how their fluorescence intensities are affected by metal coordination and π–π stacking of the ligands within the framework. The second part involves the synthesis and characterization of a new iron sulfur cluster (Bu4N)3[Fe4S4(SCN)4] and two organic radicals compounds; potassium benzophenone ketyl (K(Ph2CO)) and potassium naphthalenide (K2(C10H8)2(C4H8O)). The studies here examine the structural, spectroscopic, electrochemical, and magnetic properties of these compounds and contribute to further understanding of their chemistries.
