Relationship Power and Control among Single Heterosexual Women at Midlife: Correlates of Condom Use and Traditional Gender Role Ideology

Abstract Details

2012, Doctor of Philosophy, Miami University, Gerontology.
Relationship power and control are thought to be related to traditional gender role ideology and are important in negotiating condom use in unmarried, heterosexual couples. At the present time, there are increasing numbers of unmarried adults in middle to older age who may have not had access to information about the benefits of condom use in preventing the spread of sexually transmitted disease. The current project aims to provide information on the factors related to middle-older aged women’s condom use in sexual relationships. All participants were forty years of age or over, heterosexual, single, fluent in English, and had participated in sexual activity within the preceding 12 months. The initial purpose of the study was to understand the relationships among condom use, relationship power and control, gender role ideology, and socio-demographic characteristics. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to answer the following research questions: (a) what demographic variables contribute to the ability to predict condom use among single middle-older aged heterosexual women? (b) to what extent do relationship power and control, gender role ideology predict condom use among single middle aged heterosexual women. Continued research and investigation into why women do not utilize male condoms for STIs even when they report higher sexual relationship power and higher relationship control, is of utmost importance for women’s overall sexual health.
