The Plight of the Surrealist Writer: Intimacy in Public Space

Yocco, Caitlin A.

Abstract Details

2012, Master of Arts, Miami University, French.
Surrealist writers were ultimately preoccupied with observing life and discerning their own place, especially their individual identity. Because of this focus on the individual Surrealists are put at a disadvantage for reaching intimacy. Instead of following conventional paths to deep connection with another, he must shape intimacy to fit his lifestyle. This study examines Surrealist texts to learn how these isolated writers and poets find intimacy in unconventional ways. Through different means, such as nostalgia, eye contact, writing, and observing, the normative notions of intimacy are challenged and proven to be just as conducive to the public realm as the private. The text, one of the greatest avenues to intimacy for the writer, chronicles how intimacy in public space is not so paradoxical as it may appear.
