Acute & Chronic Physical Activity Influences On Cognitive Function: A Five-Week, Low-Intensity Intervention

Abstract Details

2012, Master of Science in Exercise and Health Studies, Miami University, Exercise and Health Studies.
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of a five-week low-intensity aerobic training program on cognitive function. Five participants (n = 5; mean age = 51.0 ± 0.5 years) separated into two groups (intervention, control) completed a Stroop Color Word Test (SCWT) and an ImPACTTM neurocognitive test at baseline, one-week (acute) and five-weeks (chronic) during the study. Through the use of an Active Workstation, the intervention group completed a low-intensity aerobic exercise program, 3-5 days per week. A significant difference was found in the word and color portions of the SCWT and the visual motor speed composite of the ImPACTTM. Further analysis shows significance between groups on the acute color portion of the SCWT, but not the ImPACTTM. The results indicate that low-intensity walking may provide enhancement in the area of attention associated with the SCWT. Conversely, walking may also have an effect on motor processing speed.
