As social media becomes an increasingly popular communication platform in our society, it is important to understand how individuals who face communication obstacles, such as those associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), utilize this mode of communication. Eighty-seven adolescents and young adults with and without ASD participated in a survey regarding online communication and social media use. Quantitative data from the closed responses were analyzed statistically to examine potential between-group differences. Qualitative data elicited by the open ended questions were analyzed to identify common themes. Identified themes were coded to quantify the results. Group differences were found in all six areas of research: social media use, communication preferences, motivations for using social media, challenges, and Facebook use. Implications for intervention are presented.
