Abstract
Research indicates that there are benefits of confronting sexism, both for the psychological well-being of the confronting individual and for prejudice reduction. Based on theories of how behavioral norms in romantic contexts differ by gender and gender role traditionalism, the current research examined the effects of romantic goals on sexism confrontation. In Study 1, participants completed a measure of chronic romantic goal endorsement and reported their anticipated responses to sexism in a hypothetical social interaction; in Study 2, active romantic goals were manipulated and participants provided actual responses in a simulated social interaction. Across both studies, responses to sexism were predicted by interactions between participant sex, romantic goals, and gender role traditionalism. Among men without romantic goals, both anticipated and actual disagreement with sexism were negatively predicted by gender role traditionalism, but among men with romantic goals, this relationship was disrupted. Among women without romantic goals, anticipated disagreement was unrelated to gender role traditionalism, but among women with romantic goals, there was a negative relationship. These effects did not, however, replicate with women's actual responses. These studies suggest that applying a motivational framework, and focusing on romantic goals in particular, is important for understanding gendered patterns of responses to sexism.
