Mental health, life periods and physical health correlates, a study of American society

Abstract Details

2013, Master of Arts, Miami University, Gerontology.
Mental health problems are increasing as a major public health problem in USA among all ages (Kessler et al., 2005). However, senior citizens are often assumed to have higher rates of mental health issues. The aim of this study was to find out if mental health of Americans deteriorates with an increase in their age after controlling for demographic, socioeconomic and health variables. Cross sectional data of 7108 respondents from National survey of midlife development in the United States of America (MIDUS) were analyzed. Bivariate relationships were analyzed and binary logistic regression conducted to determine the association between self-reported mental health and age. After controlling for the significant effects of gender, education, physical health, marital status and drinking habits, age (categorized according to major life periods) had a significant effect on mental health. Self-rated mental health declines in the middle age group people, but improves in the older age group.
