Both goal incongruity, the perception that one's important goals are not fulfilled in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), and a lack of belonging in STEM predict disinterest in the STEM fields. Goal incongruity may signal that one does not belong in the STEM fields. The present study examined the effect of goal congruity on belonging in math by experimentally activating communal or agentic goals and then framing a task to afford communal or agentic goals. Belonging and math interest/motivation were highest when agentic goals were activated and communal goals were afforded. However, exploratory analyses suggest congruity with chronically endorsed communal goals may result in higher math interest/motivation and sense of belonging. Furthermore, communal goal affordances predict higher levels of belonging and subsequent math interest/motivation. This suggests that goal congruity may result in greater belonging in math and belonging may be one path through which goal congruity impacts math interest/motivation.
