Abstract
This study characterizes subduction related seismicity along the northwestern section of the Mexico Subduction Zone where both the Rivera and Cocos plates are subducting. Data acquired from the MARS experiment, deployed from January 2006 to June 2007, is processed using Antelope to detect and locate earthquakes. Resulting hypocenters reveal three areas of intense seismicity located in the rupture regions of the 1973 and 2003 megathrust earthquakes, and inland of the 2003 zone, as well as an anti-correlation with regional non-volcanic tremor. Temporal patterns and focal mechanisms are used to determine the cause of seismicity in these areas. We find that seismicity is occurring consistently within the 2003 and 1973 zones over at least a decade recently, and thrust mechanisms in the 1973 region suggest seismicity is due to subduction processes. Hypocentral trends and thrust mechanisms inland of the 2003 rupture region support seismicity caused by a shallow-dipping Rivera plate interface.
