LUSAKA, ZAMBIA: PROVISIONS OF WATER IN PERI-URBAN COMMUNITIES AND THE INTRODUCTION OF QUALITATIVE DYE TRACING FOR INVESTIGATION OF KARST GROUNDWATER SYSTEMS

Woodling, Kristen Marie

Abstract Details

2014, Master of Environmental Science, Miami University, Environmental Sciences.
Lusaka, Zambia has a population of over 2,000,000 and is built on a vulnerable karstic dolomite aquifer which provides over half of the drinking water for this area. Around 65% of the population lives in peri-urban settlements with poor access to clean water and sanitation services. Inadequate sanitation has led to widespread contamination of the aquifer. This practicum has two main research goals 1) a water quality assessment of drinking water sources in peri-urban communities surrounding Lusaka, with a specific emphasis on Water Trusts and 2) the introduction of dye tracing as a tool for investigating groundwater flow paths and travel times and for delineating sources of groundwater. Analyses conclude that Water Trusts are providing significantly cleaner drinking water than shallow wells. Dye-trace results were not definitive, however research will continue. Delineation of the aquifer is necessary for future management of groundwater resources.
