State Policy Approaches to Obesity Prevention: Are There Differential Effects by Age Group?

Abstract Details

2014, Master of Gerontological Studies, Miami University, Gerontology.
The precipitous rise in obesity in the United States has prompted many states to pass policies to encourage healthy eating and physical activity. However, most policies are written to influence the health habits of children. Older adults may not benefit from current policy initiatives. A life course framework is used to investigate whether obesity legislation affects state rates of obesity among older adults, as well as younger ones. This research uses a data set on obesity policies enacted between the years 2003-2011.Waves 2003 and 2011 of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) are used to measure state rates of obesity. Multiple regression analysis is conducted to determine if the enactment of obesity legislation is associated with changes in state obesity rates among younger and older adults. Results show that state rates of obesity are not associated with the enactment of obesity legislation among either age group.
