Patterns and Processes of Land Use/Land Cover Change, 1975-2011, at Mt. Kasigau, Kenya

Abstract Details

2014, Master of Arts, Miami University, Geography.
This thesis examines Land Use/Land Cover changes at both regional and local scales over a 36-year period at Mt. Kasigau, Kenya. Three land cover maps were produced using the Support Vector Machine algorithm for the periods covering 1975-1979, 1999-2001, and 2011. Only the 2011 map was tested for accuracy and was found to have an overall accuracy of 73.3% and a kappa statistic of 0.71. Post-classification comparisons of the land cover maps revealed an increase in land area dedicated to agriculture. Examination of landscape metrics using Patch Analyst found evidence of increased fragmentation in the uplands, while in the lowlands both increases and decreases in fragmentation were found. Spectral Mixture Analysis was used as method to study subtle change in areas of local historical significance. The analysis revealed that the proportion of green vegetation declined in the most of the investigated locations, while bare earth proportions increased.
