QUANTUM MIXING IN 5-COORDINATE HS COBALT (II) EPR SPECTRA

Abstract Details

2014, Master of Science, Miami University, Chemistry and Biochemistry.
The EPR spectrum of 5-coordinate high Spin (hs) Co(II) at low temperatures should only show three EPR signals but routinely shows spectra with four to six signals. This thesis demonstrates that the “extra” signals may be due to quantum mixing of the excited spin state into the ground state. The UV-vis spectra of Tp(Ph,Me)Co(thiomaltol), Tp(Ph,Ph)Co(curcumin) and Tp(Ph,Ph)Co(dithiocarbamate) were analyzed using the program Ligfield, to yield the Racah and sigma bonding parameters. The program ddnloop then used these parameters to calculate the g values for both the ground and first excited state of the complexes. The calculated g values at about 8.7, 3.7, 4.2 and 3.1 ± 0.1 for all 3 complexes, were then compared to those obtained from EPR spectra of the complexes.
