A Collection of Model Recycling Program Case Studies for the Ohio EPA

This paper reports on a yearlong practicum project to satisfy the requirements for a Master of Environmental Science degree. A collection of case studies describing recycling programs was created for the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. The case studies chosen model the requirements specified in the 2009 State Solid Waste Management Plan. The 2009 State Plan emphasizes a shift from traditional awareness education to programs that utilize behavior changing methodology. There were 17 model programs identified, and ten case studies that were fully developed. The majority of these programs focused on residential recycling. Recommendations were made to continue to add to the case studies with an emphasis on finding programs for schools, industry, commercial businesses, and political leaders. In addition, recommendations were made to provide up-to-date metrics on the current case studies, maintain the case study template, and educate Solid Waste Management Districts on behavior changing methodology.
