EAT THE APPLE

Abstract Details

2015, Master of Arts, Miami University, English.
This thesis is a collection of flash creative nonfiction essays exploring my four years serving in a United States Marine Corps infantry battalion. While the pieces as a whole follow a general linear timeline, I often move forward or backward in time as well as change perspective and genre in order to create a more fractured narrative. The fractured flash nature of the pieces mirrors traumatic and absurd events and the breakdown of my own identity while being consumed by both the order and disorder of military life. I place emphasis on individual moments and their affects. By utilizing flash and multiple genres I’m able to provide contained events that structurally work both individually and as a whole that ultimately connects these stories less through coherent story lines and timeframes and more through tones and themes.
