Flexible and reversible phenotypes across the annual cycle allow birds to adjust to fluctuating ecological demands. Varying energetic demands associated with time of year have been demonstrated to drive metabolic and muscle plasticity in birds, but it remains unclear what molecular mechanisms control this flexibility. Across the catbird's annual cycle, cold induced metabolic rate (summit metabolic rate) was highest during migration and lowest during tropical wintering, and hypertrophy occurred in the heart and flight muscle during migratory periods compared to non-migration. Mitochondrial content of the heart and pectoralis remained constant across the annual cycle as quantified by aerobic regulatory enzyme activities (CS, CCO) as did lipid catabolic capacity (HOAD).Transcription factors PPAR alpha and delta, ERR beta, and coactivators PGC-1 alpha and beta; were synchronously up-regulated during pre- and fall migration compared to spring migration and breeding suggesting these pathways are crucial to initiate and maximize metabolic phenotypes in preparation for and during early migration.
