Writing placement remains a complicated and controversial issue in post-secondary institutions, especially in “open-access” institutions. Large-scaled basic-skills tests have been used for decades at most community colleges in the United States to assess the “writing” skills of large student populations and to determine placement into basic-level and first-year writing courses. However, student’s perspectives about their placement into basic-level courses, has many times been missing in research and scholarship. The impact of these processes on working class and underrepresented students is most concerning. Therefore, in this thesis, I will examine placement practices and policies using the data I collected in an extensive interview and survey study of student, faculty, and administrator perspectives and a diverse literature review to address the relationship between literacy, identity, and race. I identify these concepts as deeply-embedded issues in a politics of placement within the local context of Midwest Community College.
