electronic state of the sodium dimer have been measured using the Stern-Volmer relationship. The excited state was first identified using a narrow bandwidth (1 GHz) CW ring dye laser, and a 0.1 nm resolution spectrometer. The separation of the rotational and vibrational lines are compared with theoretical values to verify the identity of the excited state. A homebuilt Littman-Metcalf dye cavity was used to produce a tunable pulse laser with a duration of 6 ns; this short pulse time is necessary to resolve lifetimes in the tens of nanoseconds. The measured lifetime of the (8, 30) vibrational, rotational level from this experiment is 13.1(1.1) ns. This work was supported by the National Science Foundation through award NSF-PHY-1068159.
