Females and the Superintendency: The Road to Success from Three "Long Timers"

Abstract Details

2015, Doctor of Philosophy, Miami University, Educational Leadership.
This is a life history study of three female superintendents in Southwest Ohio. The participants were superintendents in school districts for five or more years. The study focuses on their interpretation of how they got to the superintendency, how they maintained tenure, and their interpretation of success in the position. The female superintendents were interviewed and the findings and implications were derived directly from their shared narratives. The study resulted in six themes: experiences, mentoring, leadership attributes, school board relations support, challenges, and definition of success. These findings generated three areas of implications: Liberal feminism in motion, the importance of mentoring, and developing confidence by overcoming challenges. This life history study gives the opportunity for aspiring female school leaders to learn about the journey to the superintendency and to inform the field of education in ways that provide support for aspiring female leaders as they join the ranks of superintendents across the nation. This study reinforces the age old adage, “Success is a journey, not a destination.”
