Rhythmic motor system control by projection neuron activity pattern and rate

Projection neurons integrate inputs from many sources, thus allowing them to be activated in various patterns and rates. However, the extent to which these patterns and rates regulate motor production is not well understood. To address this, I used well-characterized rhythmic motor circuits contained within the stomatogastric nervous system of C. borealis. Specifically, I used electrophysiological methods to test effects of different stimulation patterns and rates of a single projection neuron on the output of two central pattern generators. I found that rhythm activation, cycle period, and response to sensory input were sensitive to projection neuron activity pattern and/or rate. Additionally, I found that different CPGs are differentially modulated by the activity of the same projection neuron. Thus, regulation of projection neuron activity is an important component in motor pattern selection.
