With over 95% of youth in the United States being connected to the Internet through various social media outlets, teens have encountered new ways to form and manage relationships. With these advances in technology, we have seen the emergence of a new form of dating violence: cyber dating abuse (CDA). In order to improve our understanding of CDA, the current study examined whether or not CDA aligns with or differs in substantive ways from existing forms of in-vivo teen dating violence. Three hundred and sixty high school students (ages 14-18) completed a battery of questionnaires. The results support the fact that CDA is similar to existing forms of in-vivo dating violence due to similar prevalence rates, a similar gender distribution, and a high degree of co-occurrence between CDA and in-vivo forms of dating violence. However, there was not a significant association between CDA and correlates that are associated with TDV, suggesting that CDA may be unique in certain ways. Given the fact that CDA is an emerging topic of research, future work should continue to emphasize the high rates at which teen dating violence is occurring, while simultaneously narrowing down our understanding of how technology plays a role.
