Abstract
This study was designed to explore the association between social integration and loneliness for older Americans living in non-institutionalized settings. The final sample for the analysis included 1070 older adults who participated in the second wave of the MIDUS survey, conducted with a probability sampling design. To better understand experiences of loneliness, the study examines social participation, social network and sense of community. Of these variables, sense of community appears to be an important factor associated with the loneliness of older people. The study found that when trust, solidarity and connections are high, older people are less likely to feel lonely. While bivariate findings indicated that each of the three dimensions of sense of community had positive and significant effect on loneliness, such findings did not continue in the multivariate analysis where social participation and network were not significantly related to loneliness. There is a need to better understand how social integration affects the loneliness of older people. Sense of community was associated with loneliness; interventions that open path towards developing a sense of community among elderly should be welcome at policy levels.
