Quantifying the Carbon Reduction Impact of a University LED Lighting Retrofit Program

Abstract Details

2017, Master of Environmental Science, Miami University, Environmental Sciences.
This project is a study of the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that could be saved by retrofitting Miami University’s 2x2 and 2x4 light fixtures from fluorescent to LED lamps. The focus is on academic buildings and residence halls, though a sample of other building types were also surveyed. Dormitories and academic structures make up a majority of the buildings and total square footage on most college campuses, and therefore represent a significant opportunity for CO2 reduction and energy cost savings. The study methodology involved a survey to count the light fixtures, the specific lamp type, and the number of lamps within Miami University buildings in the study area. Current installed wattage was compared to the wattage of LED replacement lamps. The wattage difference was converted to metric tons of CO2, then to annual energy cost savings. This study found that replacing existing fluorescent lamps in academic buildings and residence halls with LEDs will reduce the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere each year by 3,827 metric tons, with a calculated energy cost saving to the University of $234,679. It is clear that LED retrofitting is a readily achievable step for universities that involves minimal disruption to building interiors.
