Abstract
The goal of this study is to examine the nursing home characteristics that are associated with Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) retention rates in Ohio nursing facilities. Retention is defined as the ability of a NH to retain the same employees in a given period of time. CNA retention rates could influence many important aspects of nursing home care, such as staff empowerment, increased resident satisfaction, and improved quality of care. The study uses the 2013 Biennial Survey of Long-Term Care Facilities collected by Scripps Gerontology Center. The survey had a 96% response rate and includes 962 nursing homes. The study includes bivariate and multivariate approaches – a crosstabulation and multiple regression analysis to better understand CNA retention rates across facilities in Ohio. The multiple regression results found that CNA retention is influenced by the ownership status, Medicaid per diem, service duration of the director of nursing (DON), and facility involvement in such quality initiatives as culture change practice. The findings of the analysis have broad implications for Ohio nursing homes and provide a better understanding about how nursing home characteristics influence CNA retention rates. These findings could contribute to efforts to improve policy, planning and practice in Ohio nursing homes.
