TEACHER-STUDENT DISCREPANCY IN REPORTS OF INTERNALIZING PROBLEMS: RELATIONSHIP TO SCHOOL FUNCTIONING

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Arts, Miami University, Psychology.
Past research indicates that teachers tend to underreport internalizing problems and that teacher and student reports of internalizing problems tend to be discrepant, with students reporting more internalizing problems. In studies of parent-child informant discrepancies, similar patterns of reporting are associated with worse functioning outcomes. The current study examined whether a similar relationship exists for teacher-student informant discrepancies and student functioning outcomes. Specifically, this study examined whether and how discrepancy between teacher and student report of internalizing problems related to objective (attendance, academic performance) and subjective (school connectedness, academic motivation) outcomes. Two hundred and forty-two fourth-grade students and their homeroom teachers (N=10) reported on students’ internalizing problems, and student-outcome data was collected through school records and student self-report. The impact of informant discrepancy was assessed by including a teacher-report*student-report interaction term in a series of multi-level models. Overall, teacher-student informant discrepancy was not related to school functioning outcomes. However, teacher-report was significantly related to all school functioning outcomes, and student-report was significantly related to academic performance. These findings indicate that, in late-elementary school, teacher-student informant discrepancy may not provide valuable information for school decision-making and intervention, while teacher report may be particularly useful. Implications for universal screening practices are discussed.
