A PRELIMINARY STUDY EXAMINING NURSING HOME STAFF PERCEPTIONS OF COMMUNICATION WITH RESIDENTS: QUANTITY, METHODS, TOPICS, AND BARRIERS

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Arts, Miami University, Speech Pathology and Audiology.
Effective staff-resident communication is an integral component of quality of life (QOL) in the nursing home (NH) setting. Although observational studies throughout the literature have quantified and described staff-resident communication with a focus on nursing departments, far less research has considered perceptions of all NH staff regarding interactions. The current study utilized a survey-based design including both closed-ended and short-answer questions. 201 NH staff members from 11 Midwestern nursing homes provided information regarding the quantity, methods, and topics of communication with residents as well as perceived barriers to effective communication. Staff members from a variety of occupation categories report limited to no use of alternative methods of communication (gestural, written, and visuographic). This is despite staff reporting high proportions of residents with expressive and receptive language deficits and difficulties interacting effectively with residents who have cognitive-communication impairments. All NH staff members have a responsibility to meet residents’ communication needs. The utility of a multiple methods communication approach is discussed as a means for improving residents’ QOL as well as job satisfaction among staff.
