Student governments have existed on college campuses for hundreds of years. These leadership associations provide opportunities for students to lead peers, make significant changes to university policy, and practice politics on a small scale. Running Start, a national organization that aims to bring young women into politics, provides a program called Elect Her to college campuses to prepare college women to run for student government leadership positions. This dissertation examines the influence of Elect Her on participants’ perception of their leadership, their motivation to run for student government office, and three items on the Socially Responsible Leadership scale that most closely align with political ambition. Comparison is made with a control group that was nominated for the workshop but did not attend. Results from the study show that Elect Her has an impact on participants compared to the control group.
