Piezoelectric transducers allow for a stress to be turned into an electrical charge, known as the direct piezoelectric effect, and for an electrical charge to be turned into a stress, known as the converse piezoelectric effect. The direct effect is used in sensing equipment, such as pressure and force sensors, whereas the converse effect is used for precision equipment and ultrasonic tools. A couple of ways to model this behavior of piezoelectric transducers include FEM and equivalent electric circuits. While FEM yields very accurate results, it has a large computational time. Equivalent circuits allow for short computational time, but with the possibility of less accuracy. While the idea of equivalent circuits for use for transducers has been extensively researched, the effect of an applied load on the transducer and its system has not been studied as much. This study examines the effects of load on piezoelectrically transduced rods, which have a common use in ultrasonic machining. The Butterworth-Van Dyke equivalent electric circuit is used for this analysis and modified. Three methods of investigating a load material’s effect on a transducer’s equivalent electric circuit were examined. A load multiplier was calculated to find a material’s effect on the damping of the transduced system.
