"Factors Influencing Retention Rates for Nurses in Nursing Homes"

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Gerontological Studies, Miami University, Gerontology.
The purpose of the study is to examine factors that influence the retention rate of nurses in Ohio’s nursing homes. Retention is defined as the ability of a nursing home to retain the same employees over a given period of time. High retention rates of nurses could help nursing homes increase resident satisfaction and deliver better quality of care. Data for this study come from the 2015 Biennial Survey of Long Term Care Facilities collected by the Scripps Gerontology Center, and from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Nursing Home Compare data for 2015. Results of multiple linear regression indicate that the retention rate of nurses was influenced by a number of factors, including location of facility, director of nursing and administrative turnover, facility size and overall facility star rating. The findings of this study are useful to practice and policy makers in identifying strategies to improve the retention of nurses in skilled facilities. Future research is needed to further examine nurse workload, professional climate, pay and benefits to be able to better understand what predicts retention rates.
