PROGRESS TOWARD BUILDING A RATCHET IN COLD ATOM DISSIPATIVE LATTICES

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Science, Miami University, Physics.
This thesis presents pump-probe spectroscopy data for studying a 3-D optical lattice. The data collected is for two cases of probe polarization. The polarization of the probe beam determines which features will appear in the probe transmission spectrum. We discuss the appearance of vibrational frequency features and Brillouin frequency features on the probe transmission spectrum as a result of probe polarization. We find that, by not allowing the atoms to thermalize in the lattice, the probe transmission spectrum's vibrational frequency features for each probe polarization can be made to look identical. Further, we find that the Brillouin features may be interpreted as arising due to a probe-induced ratchet for a specific velocity class of atoms within the lattice.
