A series of five-coordinate cobalt(II) complexes was studied using low-temperature, frozen-solution EPR, with the goal of determining the electronic ground state of each complex. The relationship between coordinating atom identity and electronic structure was also examined. Temperature and power dependence studies produced mixed results. Three of the six complexes studied showed definitive EPR characteristics of a Ms = ±3/2 defined ground state, with the remaining three complexes showing characteristics of both a ±3/2 and ±1/2 ground state. Results also showed a significant but inconsistent effect of thionation on electronic structure between the three pairs of complexes. Further study is necessary to quantitatively link coordination geometry and donor identity to changes in spin-orbit coupling and spin state mixing, which are known to heavily influence five- coordinate Co(II) EPR line shape, as well as the configuration of the electronic ground state.
