A Case Study of an Inclusive Elementary and Special Education Teacher Preparation Program

Kelly, Molly Dames

Abstract Details

2018, Doctor of Philosophy, Miami University, Educational Leadership.
Special Education has been dominated by discourses of deficit, practices of exclusion and segregation and a behaviorist approach to education. Disability Studies provides a theoretical framework and counter-narrative that rejects the medical model of disability, privileges the lived experiences of the disabled and understands disability to be an aspect of human diversity. Teacher preparation is a site in which changes to the dominant discourse and practices can be developed towards more socially just practices in education. This intrinsic qualitative case study of one university’s inclusive elementary and special education program with affiliations to disability studies sought to determine what factors contributed to the functioning of this program and what role disability studies plays. Data gathering from multiple sources revealed five contributory themes that play a role in this inclusive program. These themes are named Values, Philosophy and Mission; Legacy; Disability Studies; University Value and Support; and Service / Action.
