My internship at the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (USEPA) National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) in Cincinnati, OH, from June 1st, 2017 – May 31st, 2018 consisted of three major activities: 1) Supporting the ongoing operation of the Engineering Technical Support Center (ETSC), 2) Providing detailed technical evaluations on 3 Superfund sites, and 3) Providing background information for two regulations being developed by the USEPA. The ETSC project management system has recently evolved into an online management system for requests by utilizing SharePoint and Excel to record, track, and manage site requests from all ten regions. Under the direction of my mentor, I was asked to provide technical assistance on the following Superfund sites: 1) West Lake Landfill, MO 2) Mississippi Phosphate, MS and 3) Doe Run Mine Tailing, MO. For these sites, I applied my knowledge from the Problem Solving Wheel in addition to Superfund's National Contingency Plan’s (NCP) nine criteria to accurately and thoroughly provide information to the ETSC Director and upper USEPA management. Additionally, through researching the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act, I produced comments for the ETSC Director for the Hazardous Spill Prevention rule and minimizing air releases from site remediation activities rule.
