Associations of Subjective vs. Objective Physical Activity Level Related to Medication Use In Older Adults

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Science in Exercise and Health Studies, Miami University, Exercise and Health Studies.
Due to the increased burden of chronic disease, prescription medication (Rx) use in older adults is high. Level of physical activity (PA) is a lifestyle factor that may influence Rx use and associated complications. The purpose of this study was to identify correlates among PA level measured subjectively and objectively with Rx use in older adults. In 96 older adults (58F, 38M, 77±7.7 years) Rx use, subjective PA level (CHAMPS questionnaire), and objective PA level (Accelerometry) were measured. Partial correlations were run between variables while controlling for age and BMI. Hierarchical regression was utilized to determine best predictors of PA. Mean values±SE for the variables include: moderate-to-vigorous subjective PA (MVPA-S): 1353±120 kcal·wk-1, moderate-to-vigorous objective PA (MVPA-O): 51.2±5.1 cts·day-1; Rx number: 3.4±0.3. Rx was not correlated with MVPA-S (r=-0.20, p> 0.05), but was inversely correlated with MVPA-O (r=-0.31, p< 0.05). MVPA-O was found to be the best predictor of prescription medication use (F (3, 63) = 8.592, p<0.01). Preliminary data show that Rx use in older adults is inversely associated with MVPA-O, which also appears to be the strongest predictor of PA. These preliminary data suggest that lifestyle factors may significantly influence Rx use and associated complications.
