Potential Social Emotional Benefits from Academic Interventions Provided During a Summer Reading Program

Summer reading programs provide academic supports to students who participate, but do they also provide social emotional benefits? We look at a summer reading program that provided one-on-one intensive supports to elementary students for four weeks. School psychology graduate students administered academic evidence based interventions (EBIs) under the supervision of a professor from a local university. The graduate students and the parents of the elementary students also completed the DESSA-Mini in order to collect data regarding the participants’ social emotional skills at the beginning of the program and at the end. A Paired Samples T-test was conducted to report any significant differences. Results from the parent completed forms indicated a significant difference in social emotional skills at the end of the four weeks. While the graduate student forms didn’t reveal a significant difference, the trends indicated an increase in scores. Furthermore, suggestions are provided in order to continue this research with larger populations.
