Abstract
This study examined the impact that mental health training has on the attitudes of preservice teachers towards individuals with mental health disorders. Attitudes were measured using a modified version of the Community Attitudes to Mental Illness Scale (CAMI; Taylor & Dear, 1981). Results from the survey were analyzed using MannWhitney tests and t-tests to determine whether pre-service teacher participants who reported receiving training in mental health had more positive attitudes about individuals with mental health disorders than those who did not report receiving training in mental health. In addition, this study sought to determine whether participants who reported having a close relationship with someone with a mental health disorder reported more positive attitudes towards individuals with mental health disorders than participants who did not report having such a close relationship with someone with a mental health disorder. It was found that there was no statistically significant difference in attitudes between the group who reported receiving training and the group that reported not receiving training. Results did show a statistically significant difference in attitudes between pre-service teachers who have a close relationship with someone who has experienced a mental health disorder and those who do not, with those who reported having a close relationship with someone who has a mental health disorder reporting less favorable attitudes. Limitations of the study and potential future directions for research are also discussed.
