Abstract
Women have been constantly underrepresented in coaching and administrative positions across all levels. However, most research has centered on the areas of professional and intercollegiate sport. The purpose of this study was to determine the gender specific greatest challenges that women working in high school athletic administration face. Utilizing a survey based on the Female Sport Manager Career Survey (Bower, Hums, & Grappendorf, 2015) and sent to the entire population of 87 Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) female athletic directors, four research questions were posed: 1) Do women consider their industry of interscholastic athletic administration male-dominated?, 2) What aspects of the job make high school administration male-dominated?, 3) Are professional networks catered for women being utilized by women working in interscholastic athletic administration?, and 4) What impact did Title IX have on career opportunities for women working in the industry of interscholastic athletic administration? Upon analysis of the results through coding themes from the open-ended responses, several results and subsequent implications were found, including the lack of professional networks, the knowledge (or lack thereof) of Title IX and the overwhelming perception of a male-dominated work setting.
