Disrupting the Connotation of Response to Innovation at the Secondary Level Through Design Thinking

Abstract Details

2019, Doctor of Education, Miami University, Educational Leadership.
The Response to Intervention (RtI) framework has had a difficult time finding its place at the secondary level. With a lack of guidance from literature, high schools are forced to develop a system from scratch and to implement a mandated model to help all students. The development and implementation of this model has led high school teachers to hold negative perceptions towards RtI. How can a framework be established in a culture that feels negatively towards RtI? This study utilized the Design Thinking methodology, created by IDEO’s Kelley brothers, to initiate the change process among educators in constructing an updated RtI framework at a suburban high school. Lewin’s change theory, in addition to Kemmis’ spiral action model, were key in evaluating the initial perceptions of the current RtI framework, and how the perceptions of the framework changed as developments towards intervention were communicated and measured. The study indicated that teacher perceptions after experiencing the design thinking process were often reported as more positive and willing to continue participating in change-related initiatives.
