Motivation Matters: Exploring the Relationships Among Well-Being, Motivation, and Inflammation in Older Adults

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Science, Miami University, Exercise and Health Studies.
The underlying premise of positive health is that well-being is accompanied by engaging in healthy behaviors and optimal functioning of multiple physiological systems. The present study specifically examined the relationships among psychological well-being (PWB), motivation for diet and physical activity, and inflammation in older adults. Participants (N = 79) were recruited from a midwestern town. PWB was assessed by eudaimonic well-being (EWB), hedonic well-being (HWB), and relatedness. Health behavior motivation comprised intuitive eating (IE) and motivation for exercise. Objective physical activity, body mass index (BMI), and inflammation (serum C-reactive protein and IL-6) were measured. The three well-being variables were positively related to each other and various aspects of IE and exercise motivation. IE was generally related to more intrinsic forms of exercise motivation. IL-6 was negatively associated with unconditional permission to eat and positively to body-food choice congruence. A five-stage hierarchical multiple regression was conducted, and eight independent variables accounted for 31.2% of the variance in IL-6. These findings suggest a possible link among well-being, health behavior motivation, and inflammation that future work should explore. Possible explanations for null findings between PWB and inflammation are discussed.
