Abstract
Education and a child’s schooling ultimately begin at home with their parents or guardians. All families want their children to be prepared to be successful in school and in life. If children do not have early learning opportunities, they may begin kindergarten with a large achievement gap. However, not all families have the opportunity, access, and knowledge of kindergarten readiness. The purpose of this study is to examine kindergarten teachers’ perceptions and understandings of kindergarten readiness. This study also examines the tools teachers used to determine readiness and how the data collected helped guide their instruction. A literature review supports the conclusion that there are multiple definitions of kindergarten readiness including those derived from state policy, teachers’ definitions, and parents’ definitions. This study found that kindergarten teachers perceive kindergarten readiness as a multifaceted issue. Teachers who participated in the study, overall, perceived those students who attended a quality preschool as more prepared than those students who did not attend preschool or who went to a daycare. It was also found that children from poverty do not all have equal access to quality preschool programs. The tool all kindergarten teachers within the State of Ohio use at the beginning of each school year is the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA). This study shows that the data collected through that process is not used or reviewed once the test is administered and concluded. The teachers in this study, rather, use formative assessments to gather student data and inform their instruction.
