MARRY A WHITE MAN

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Arts, Miami University, English.
My thesis, Marry a White Man, is a collection of poetry and prose that examines humor as an act of resistance. An effective use of humor in poetry draws the audience in and exposes its complicity in the problems that the humor has as its subject, much as Margaret Cho does in “I’m the One That I Want,” which speaks to her experience as a teen star and a young Asian woman. My work builds upon Cho’s use of dark, situational humor, exploring the benefits and limits of adopting the persona of the “funny girl.” For me, humor has been a balm that has helped me face the unwanted and uncomfortable. Humor allows me to write through my experiences as a woman and an Asian adoptee and exposes the patriarchal, capitalist, and imperialist systems that help to produce trauma and discomfort.
