Liberte Egalite Sororite: Feminist Directing Strategies Applied to The Revolutionists at Miami University

Bledsoe, Stormi Danielle

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Arts, Miami University, Theatre.
This creative portfolio is an exploration of feminist directing as applied to Lauren Gunderson’s The Revolutionists, staged in the spring of 2019 at Miami University. The Revolutionists tells the story of four women as they navigate their way through the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. It is a story about sisterhood, social justice, and finding your voice in the midst of revolution; these themes are reflected in our own social and political lives in 2019. Throughout the production process for this show I questioned what it meant to be a feminist director. How does someone become a feminist director? What ethical responsibilities set the feminist director apart in her field? In asking these questions, I realized that the feminist director should embrace open communication and collaboration between members of the design team and encourage their creativity as well as her own. Working with actors, the feminist director looks to foster creativity while also creating positive movement experiences to empower actors to make bold choices for the stage. Being a feminist director means placing as much attention to the process as to the product. As feminism honors the lived experiences of women, the cast and I kept journals reflecting on our artistic process. The following pages trace my development as a feminist director and as a scholar/artist.
