Observation of Slow Light, Stored Light, and Dicke Narrowing in Warm Alkali Vapor

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Science, Miami University, Physics.
In this thesis, I describe observations of slow light and Dicke narrowing in warm 87Rb vapor under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Experimental details are provided on how we obtain light speeds less than 400 m/s in buffer gas cells, and in separate experiments, Dicke-narrowed EIT linewidths of a few kHz. I also present preliminary observations of stored light, with modest storage times of up to 500 μs. The theory behind these phenomena is also discussed. In accordance with our data the EIT linewidth increases quadratically with pump-probe relative angle - this is a defining signature of Dicke narrowing.
