Abstract
Through a qualitative narrative inquiry approach, I examined how female educational leaders, in the role of principal, narrate their experiences of leadership in secondary education. This problem of practice is relevant because female leadership within the high school setting may pose unique challenges and opportunities that, if better understood, could inform meaningful policy and/or practical improvements. Expectations, cultural norms, and hefty professional requirements within educational leadership positions may often make it challenging for all principals, both male and female, to have coinciding meaningful work and family lives. When a female high school principal must adapt to the needs of her building, and simultaneously maintain a successful personal life, it may be challenging. The challenges faced may lead to early career burnout, high levels of stress and reduced ambition for upward mobility within the profession. Data from surveys and semi-structured interviews were inductively content analyzed in an attempt to answer the research question: How do female educational leaders in the role of principal narrate their experiences of leadership in secondary education? This qualitative study which is limited to only female participants and bounded by proximity thus provides a glimpse into the lives of female high school principals, illuminating the unique leadership experiences of some women and creating a better understanding of the demands required of a female high school principal.
