The Relationship Between Early Sport Participation and Motivational Orientations in College Athletes

Abstract Details

2020, Master of Science, Miami University, Kinesiology, Nutrition, and Health.
Youth sport has been suggested to be a positive avenue for youth development, and researchers in sport psychology have proposed many different pathways that can set up youth athletes for long term success. Recently, a popular pathway among coaches and parents is early sport specialization. Research has supported the merits of early sport diversification (Cote, Lidor & Hackfort, 2009) but there has also been benefits proposed for early sport specialization (Gould, 2010). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine college athletes’ early sport participation and examine how that was associated with their motivational orientations. The athletes of this study were college athletes (N=103) that competed at the Division 1 level and at the college club level. The results of this study purport that specializers are higher than samplers on external regulation and amotivation, and lower on task orientation than samplers. Overall, youth athletes may benefit from early sport diversification and collegiate athletes could benefit from being in environments that emphasize self-referenced improvement and less focus on outcomes.
